Walk-er Run Toil and Trouble Pay for 'Double Knott'

WALKER (9/14) - Few had the heart to walk or run in the Walk-er Run after Sept. 11 last year. The canceled 5K and 10K returned on a day so perfect that many entrants - perhaps inspired by baseball great Ernie Banks's fondness for doubleheaders - said, "Let's run two!"

Among them was Laurie "Double" Knott. "I won medals in both," enthused Knott between plunges into a fabulous post-race fruit spread. "Listen." Clink. Knott's reward for doubling was the music of both tokens, dangled around her neck, going clink.

Jenison's Jimi Minnema, who'd maximized his success sweeping both events in their last two runnings, won the men's 5K in 16:11, kicking by Byron Center's Travis Clement (16:21) on the stretch down Remembrance Road.

In the 10K Clement, remembering, pulled away to triumph in 35:26. "You can't win 'em all," he told Minnema as the friendly foes hauled home trophies the size of Kenyans.

"You can try," Minnema replied.

Choosing to "double not" were women's 5K and 10K champions Marcia Parker of Grand Rapids (21:26) and Jennifer Carsok of Grand Haven (40:07). Parker edged Wyoming's Jamie Ryktarsky by two seconds. Carsok romped unchallenged after defending-queen Gayle Kuipers eased up due to plantar problems.

The feast served by the Walker Recreation Committee didn't heal her heel, but it was "the berries," Kuipers said.
