Holiday Hustle 5K/Mile is Hit

DEXTER (12/13/08) -- Festive fun was the essence of Running Fit’s first annual Holiday Hustle 5K and 1-mile runs.
Entrants received flashing Santa hats or reindeer antlers. On race director Randy Step’s “Go,” close to 800 runners and walkers stormed into snowflakes and neighbor streets.
Spectators were treated to lots of silliness. In addition to hats and antlers, many entrants wore jingle bells and other holiday attire. At least one Santa and Mrs. Claus were decked to the hilt.
Kyle Ormsby led the pack in the hilly 5K with a winning time of 17:25. Jessica Forsyth paced the women, finishing in 19:46.
Their victories earned them Mickey and Minnie Mice, who had been attached to the lead bike and dressed in lights. Ormsby and Forsyth also earned $50 gift certificates at Running Fit stores.
Brent Layson won the mile in 6:58. Madeline Nicholas led the women and finished right behind Layson in 7:00. Each received $25 gift certificates.
Age-division winners won tinted ornaments, five deep.
Goodwill prevailed as $5 from every entry fee was donated to the Dexter Chamber of Commerce, which distributed money to local charities.
Many entrants donated canned and nonperishable food items for the needy. Givers earned raffle tickets, rewarding kindnesses with gift certificates, bags, hats, shirts and backpacks.
