Michigan Runner Television: A New Race Course to Add to My List

On occasion, I have put together a list of some of my favorite courses I have run over the years. Most of them have a visually spectacular edge to them, an important ingredient when you are as slow as I am. My runner's dozen would include the great bridge runs of the Montreal and New York Marathons, the over the top excitement of the Chicago Marathon, the phenomenally beautiful Big Sur International, the high elevation excitement of the Swiss Alpine Marathon and more at home, the Dexter Ann Arbor, 5/3 River Bank Run, the National Cherry Festival 15K, the Volkslaufe, The Detroit Free Press Marathon, Steve's Run and The Crim.

However, that list was amended last week, when we took in a 5K Tiger Trot at Joker Marchant stadium in Lakeland, Florida. While my lovely bride Jennie participated in the 5K, I thought I would grab some video for our Michigan Runner Television Channel. I was getting ready to catch the start when RD Ron Myers, loud speaker in hand, indicated to the crowd that part of the course was on the old Lodwick Airfield runway that was used to train pilots in WW II. I was thunderstruck, as this was the field where my dad, Herschel McCafferty, had instructed pilots during the war. I knew the airport was in Lakeland and also knew that I had lived there for a short time in 1944, but I had not really tracked down where it was.

After the race started, I touched base with Ron Myers, who is the Director of Florida Operations for the Detroit Tigers, and he was equally thunderstruck, as I was the first individual he met that had a connection to the airfield during those times. He told me to check out the former mess hall, where there were a number of photos during that time, eerily like two photos I had of my dad, when he was in the service.

Anyway, it was quite a thrill for me to come face to face with some of my dad's history. Our Michigan Runner Television show this week, has a number of story lines, the one I just told you about, the 5K race where Bobby Crim finished nursing a pulled muscle and an interview with my friend, Doug Joy, who was a student of my father's when he had his business at Pontiac Airport.

Eastern Michigan Hosts Invitational Mile, Friday, April 16
==========================================================
Eastern Michigan coach John Goodridge alerted us to an Invitational Mile on Friday:
". . .Invitational Mile Friday night at EMU's Rynearson Stadium scheduled for 8:15 in the evening 'Under The Lights' as part of the EMU TWILIGHT TRACK MEET. . .

EMU's David Brent(4:00.90) vs Michigan's Lex Williams (4:02 and recently won Stanford Relays 10K) will compete.

This past winter Brent ran 4:00.90 and was a MAC Mile Champion. He also anchored the EMU 5th place Distance Medley Relay at the NCAA National Championships. The team ran the 6th fastest time in the nation and also broke a 15 year old EMU Record running 9:32.78.

EMU has had five sub 4:00 milers in its history.

A CAN-AM OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT 2000 Meter Steeplechase with five Olympic Trials competitors from each side of the bridge will be at 6PM."

Detroit Mercy vs Oakland Dual Meet Includes Kid's Race, Open Mile, April 15

Guy Murray, University of Detroit Mercy's Director of Track and Field/Cross Country emailed us about events this weekend:

"Hello! We are hosting the 5th Annual Track and Field Dual between the University of Detroit Mercy and Oakland University, here at Titan Field on the main campus of UDM. The third year of hosting at our facility. This year we have a new twist of a Decathlon and Heptathlon competition that will kick off the meet on Wednesday April 14th. It will be a developmental competition with most participants in their first try at the event but still a feat to undertake.

The main portion of the meet will start on Thursday April 15th, 2010 at 4:30pm.

We will once again host the Tommy Titan v Oakland Grizzly Kid’s Race and an open Mile for all so bring your shoes to join in the fun."

A new race, Heart of a Spartan, will feature a finish down the Spartan Stadium tunnel and out onto the field. Race day is Sunday, May 2nd and distances are 10K, 5K or 1 Mile.

Runners, walkers and wheelchair participants may register online now and save before the price increases April 15.

With sales of $53 million in February 2010, running specialty year-to-date sales rose 10.3% to $104.9 million. February sales were 11% above the same month in 2009. Footwear, with 71% of total February sales, maintained the positive trends seen in previous months' sales. All footwear gained 8% in February with road running shoes up 6% for the period."
