BOSTON MARATHON QUOTES OF THE WEEK
==================================
"I felt like Charlie Brown in a Thanksgiving Day Parade."
-- Todd Snyder about his first Boston in 2003. (http://www.hansons-running.com/index.php?option=com_content&...)
"And with that the gun went off and Salazar shot out of there like he came out of a cannon and I was right behind him."
-- Dick Beardsley about "Duel in the Sun" 1982, from Inside Texas Running, April 2009

BOSTON MARATHON: ARE MICHIGAN ATHLETES RECORDS THREATENED?
==========================================================
Greg Meyer's long, varied and accomplished running career typically is summed up in the single phrase "the last American man to have won the Boston Marathon" (1983, 2:09:00). The same thing happens to Lisa Larsen Weidenbach (now Rainsberger) who is the "last American to have won the Boston Marathon" (1985, 2:34:06). The field for the 113th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 20 includes Olympic marathoners Brian Sell and Ryan Hall as well as Olympian Kara Goucher. Goucher's debut marathon in the New York City Marathon was the fastest American debut ever.
Right now, Greg and Lisa have the status of "last Americans."
In addition to that excitement, Bill Rodgers will be running to celebrate his 1979 win and Michigan's own Mark Bauman will be running his 40th consecutive Boston. We'll be watching the broadcast on Universal Sports TV. An online version will also available on the Universal Sports' Website (http://www.universalsports.com).

LARRY EDER: BOSTON 2009 - BELLWEATHER OF THE RUNNING INDUSTRY
=============================================================
"It is late Tuesday night, the week of the Boston marathon. For myself, as the president of the Running Network, this is one of the busiest weeks of the business year. And for someone in media, where the first thing most companies cut during bad economic times is advertising, this winter and spring has been, shall we say, anxious. Boston could tell us if the sport will continue to grow.
I am in Boston early due to the launch of the New Balance Research Lab. NB brought in a dozen members of the media to observe the lab, and get a feel for the changes going on in New Balance. On Wednesday, Brooks Running launched a new website,
www.runningsportfans.com, a very different approach to running marketing. Starting Wednesday, April 15, ASICS, with their marathon wunderkid, Ryan Hall, will be providing a blog plus exclusive video as Ryan tries to be the first American male since Greg Meyer to win the Boston Marathon (1983). The blog is www.asicsamerica.com/ryanhall, and Ryan is to be giving his fans a personal view of his battle for Boston supremacy.
Nike is doing a media event on Sunday and will obviously be hoping for Kara Goucher, who is running Boston for the first time, to give US women their first victory here since 1985. And on top of that, adidas continues to sponsor the Boston marathon, in a way, in my mind, that continues to give Boston its iconic presence in our global sport. Add to that group that PUMA, Reebok, Ecco, Avia, Mizuno, and many others will be pushing their footwares on the many who come through the Boston expo doors.
There is the story about a former president of a company which uses a swoosh for a symbol, who came through the Boston expo, seeing its well done shoe booths, booths for races, and then, booth after booth of discounted shorts, apparel and shoes and noted, "this is not a race, it is a flea market."
Boston is a bit of all those things-bellweather, meeting place, health and fitness expo, great weekend of spring. It shows that our sport has grown up. It shows that, even with the economic woes that we have, running is growing and the focuses running brand can do well. The unfocused running brand, well, that party is over.
2009 has about three dozen running footwear brands. Perhaps a dozen are very good to excellent. Good does not make it anymore, perhaps in the discount rack. The consumer is educated, and wants a shoe to fit their needs and they have read the running magazines to know that there is a shoe for everyone out there.
Boston is the most exclusive marathon in the world. One has to qualify to get here. The expo has these 25,000 plus their families. In fact, if a product does well here, it should do well just about anywhere.
Running is growing up. If Running figures its place in the sun, the current need to lower our carbon footprint, to counter obesity in childhood, to cut health costs could all be done with running and walking programs. As one of our titles says, Get Active!
Watch the expo closely, watch the restaurants and hotels around here. Rooms are down, and folks will be watching their dollars, but Monday will be a celebration of the human spirit from first place to 25,000th place. The 2009 BAA Boston Marathon is not just about who wins, but if our sport is still winning."

MICHIGAN MILERS DOMINATE FIELD AT BOSTON INVITATIONAL MILE, APRIL 19
====================================================================
The Boston Athletic Association is introducing a new event: the B.A.A. Invitational Mile. 19 professional milers will race in Back Bay on Sunday, April 19, the day before the 113th Boston Marathon. Among the 19 who will chase a $3,000 prize for first place are four Michigan athletes:
-- Anna Willard, a 2008 Olympian in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and reigning U.S. Indoor Champion at 1,500 meters
-- Lindsey Gallo, 1,500-meter runner-up at the 2006 U.S. Outdoor Championships and 2009 Boston Indoor Games mile champion
-- Rob Myers, a three-time U.S. Indoor Champion at 1,500 meters
-- Steve Sherer, third at the 2008 U.S. indoor championships

E2 EATING & EXERCISE FOR OPTIMAL FITNESS: CALCIUM & VITAMIN D
=============================================================
Bone density is maximized by age 30. Building strong, healthy bones is of primary importance in children and young adults, and maintaining those stores is important throughout adulthood. Athletes often meet key characteristics for keeping bones strong which include regular weight bearing activities, not smoking and the use of alcohol in moderation. However, 55% of males and 78% of females > age 20 do not consume enough calcium. Even if they do consume calcium rich foods, many Michigan athletes train indoors 2/3rds of the year limiting their sun exposure which in addition to dairy is a good source of Vitamin D, a requirement for calcium absorption. Calcium rich sources include: low fat milk, yogurt and ice cream, calcium fortified orange juice (good source of Vitamin C & Potassium), salmon (omega 6) soybeans and baked beans (iron and fiber). Vitamin D rich sources beyond dairy include: salmon, mackerel, tuna, shrimp and some margarines. Inadequate intake of calcium and vitamin D increases your risk for low bone-mineral density and stress fractures which will take you off the running circuit for the season. To determine your specific calcium and vitamin D requirements and learn more about these nutrients visit:
http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/factsheets/calcium.a...
http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminD_...
If you take a multivitamin don’t assume your calcium and Vitamin D needs are covered. Iron interferes with calcium absorption; so many brands don’t include it. The above sites discuss dosage, timing and selection tips in addition to current research.

NORTHPORT'S RUN & WALK FOR FUNDS WILL CELEBRATE 30TH ON JULY 4
==============================================================
Earlier this week we spoke with George W. Anderson, race director of the Run & Walk for Funds in the beautiful town of Northport. Run and Walk for Funds is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and Anderson has been the race director since the beginning. Originally held in conjuunction with Northport's Harbor Days festival, the race has outlasted the festival. Anderson is especially proud that the event has raised more than $65,000 for the American Cancer Society. Local merchants underwrite the race, so all entry fees go to the American Red Cross.
Since Northport is a destination resort town, participants have come from places all over the country. Anderson calls it a cosmopolitan race. Last year's event was won by someone who is running a 10K in every state. Run & Walk for Funds was the race he chose for Michigan. Events also include a 5K run and a 2 Mile Walk. For more information, contact George W. Anderson, gwanderson@chartermi.net, (231) 386-5188.
