Boston Marathon Weekend: One to remember, by Gary Morgan
========================================================
What a weekend it was here in Boston. On Friday I went to the elite athlete press conference and saw all the top runners there. It was cool seeing all the runners together talking about the race and how they felt about running this famous race. Headed over to the Expo and saw the latest and greatest running items for sale. It was raining in Boston instead of dropping ash like it was in Europe. Many European runners couldn't make it to the race.
Saturday went to the Champions Breakfast and they honored five past champions of the race including Michigan native Lisa Rainsburger (Larsen) - 1985 Champion and last American women to win Boston, Gelindo Bordin - 1990 Winner and the only person to be Olympic Champion and Boston Winner, Jacqueline Gareau - 1980 winner, Geoff Smith 1984 and 1985 winner. Ron Hill - 1970 Winner didn't make it because of the Volcano. It was great seeing all these past champions and a few others who showed up, including our own Doug Kurtis, former Masters winner here.
Sunday I jogged in the BAA 5K that runs around the city center and finishes at the famous Boston marathon finish. The 5K was a nice little tuneup before the big day. There were some mile races for high schoolers and elites after the 5k. I left as it was raining again - third straight day of rain.
Patriots Day and Marathon Monday came with sunshine and 45 degree temperatures to start the race. The athletes village was crowded with 23,000 runners. The first wave of runners went off at 10am and I started in the second wave at 10:30. I was right on the starting line in the second wave. I always wondered what it looked like up here in the front. The gun goes off and 26.2 miles of exhilaration as over 500,000 fans cheer us on all the way to Boston. It was a perfect day for running as the temperature stayed around 55 and sunny with just a slight breeze. You couldn't get it any better. Then after I finished I heard there was a new course record. Fantastic. What a way to finish off a great Boston Marathon weekend.

E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Earth Day
========================================================================
Earth Day, it’s not some hippie, tree hugging event. There’s nothing radical about wanting clean air and water or a desire to protect the environment.
Take a look inside your grocery cart or kitchen this Thursday and see what you can do to become more eco friendly.
1. Buy local. Consider that the average meal travels 1500 miles to make it from field-to-plate, that’s a lot of carbon you can eliminate by buying locally. Look for the “Grown in Michigan” sign in your grocery store, join a coop http://www.coopdirectory.org/directory.htm, or buy from the local produce stands and farmer’s markets over the next several months.
2. Plant a vegetable and herb farm in your yard or join a community garden. Tomatoes, peas, beans, onions, sweet corn, and green leafy vegetables have a pretty good success rate in Michigan. This is a great project for kids. Get starter seed packets at the grocery store, a good patch of soil from outside and reuse a cardboard egg carton as your starter pots.
3. Waste less. Reduce, reuse, recycle and compost. Plan out your weekly grocery list so you aren’t burning gas on additional midweek trips. A meal plan will also help you stick to a budget and eliminates the end of week toss on foods that have gone bad. Look in your grocery cart, what can you do to reduce excessive packaging by manufacturers. Don’t buy products that come in single service containers, this includes everything from water and sports products to after school snacks and deodorant. Make it a practice to carry your own coffee cup, water bottle and grocery bags to stores.
4. Last but not least, run, walk or cycle wherever possible.

Norm Frank Named Recipient of USATF Masters Long Distance Running Award
=======================================================================
"INDIANAPOLIS - Norm Frank, who has completed more marathons than any American in history, will be presented with a Special Recognition Award by USA Track & Field's Masters Long Distance Running Committee on April 19, 2010. The award will be presented in recognition of Frank's unique contributions to the sport of Masters Long Distance Running.
The presentation will begin at 10 a.m., at an informal brunch to be held at the Clover Blossom Legacy Retirement Community, 100 McAuley Dr., in Rochester, N.Y. The date and time of the presentation were chosen to coincide with the start time of the 114thrunning of the Boston Marathon, a race that Frank has competed in 30 times.
Frank ran his first marathon at the 1967 Boston Marathon when he was 35-years old. Since then he has completed an incredible 965 marathons.
For three years, 1994-1997, Frank held the World Record for most marathons completed according to the Guinness Book of Records. A resident of Rochester, N.Y., the 78-year old Frank has run, trotted and walked in marathons in every state in the Union and many nations abroad. His total of 965 Marathons completed equates to an average of over 20 marathons a year since his first in 1967. All totaled he's logged some 25,000 miles in his marathon races alone, and estimates place his total number of miles run at 86,000."
-- USATF News Release
Among Norm Frank's marathons are several in Michigan: Carrollton in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and Scotty Hanton in 1997.
