E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Produce: Purchase or Pass?
====================================================================
The “Dirty Dozen” is the name assigned by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) to a group of produce that consistently tests high for pesticide use. They include: peach, apple, bell pepper, celery, nectarine, strawberry, cherries, kale, lettuce, imported grapes, carrot and pear. If you don’t want to pass on these items try the ever expanding, organic section of your local grocer. If the organic section seems to pricey this visit, try the “Clean 15” instead: onion, avocado, sweet corn, pineapple, mango, asparagus, sweet peas, kiwi, cabbage, eggplant, papaya, watermelon, broccoli, tomato, sweet potato. The EWG maintains that consumers can lower their pesticide exposure by almost 80% by avoiding the dirty dozen and that the clean 15 will expose a person to less than 2 pesticides per day. Michigan Skier TV: White Pine Stampede
======================================
As we headed out with our cross country skis this morning we were reminded of how many runners take up cross country skiing when the weather permits. We met many of them last weekend when we covered the White Pine Stampede for our sister network, Michigan Skier TV. Jack McKaig and his team of White Pine Stampede volunteers caught one of those great Michigan winter days for their annual Mancelona and Bellaire based event. 400+ freestyle and classic cross country skiers took to the storied trails to compete in either the 40K or 20K race or the 10K Tour. It was a glorious day.

Monica Joyce Makes Running Times' "All Time Best Age-Graded Performances"
==========================================================================
Running Times March 2010 issue has compiled and published an all-time top American performers list by age-graded percentage for the 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon. The list includes a number of familiar names and several people who regularly compete with (and sometimes lose to) some of Michigans best masters runners: Peter Magill, Dennis Simonaitis and Joan Samuelson.

Monica Joyce, the only Michigan athlete who appears on the list, has 2 performances in the 10K:
34:32, Meteor 10K, April 5, 2008 - ranked 2nd at 98.3%
35:23, Turkey Run 10K, November 27, 2008 - ranked 5th at 97.1%

Nordic Walking Poles from Glen Arbor, Michigan Help Wounded Warriors Move
=========================================================================
Reader Pete Edwards alerted us to this interesting and helpful use of Nordic Walking Poles:

"Nordic Walking Poles are radically improving balance, stability, gait, walking posture and walking comfort of Wounded Warriors! Quality Nordic Walking Poles from WWW.SKIWALKING.COM and the American Nordic Walking System have been donated to Wounded Warrior Programs at Walter Reed, Fort Carson, Fort Lewis/Madigan/McChord and Vicenza, Italy.

Many of the soldiers attending Edwards' Nordic Walking Classes at Fort Carson in Colorado came with canes and/or walkers. One of the soldiers had just been released from his wheel chair. All found much improved balance, stability, walking posture and walking comfort.

Members of the Warrior Transition Battalion and others got to test-drive the durable one-piece Nordic walking poles custom fit to his/her specific height at the Soldier Family Assistance Center at Fort Carson. WTB Command Sgt. Maj. Jim Bunch also tested the poles for himself. Participants in the Nordic Walking Clinics found that the poles radically improved balance, stability, walking posture, walking gait and walking comfort. Many of the Wounded Warriors commented on how they the poles really did helped to reduce the stress to the shins, knees, hips and back.

Soldiers assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion are recovering from all types of injuries and many experience balance problems from leg, back and traumatic brain injuries."

Ritzenhein, McGregor, Lokken Will Compete for National Cross Country Titles
===========================================================================
"INDIANAPOLIS - American record holders Dathan Ritzenhein (Portland, Ore.) and Shalane Flanagan (Pittsboro, N.C.) lead the fields at the 2010 USA Cross Country Championships scheduled for Saturday at Plantes Ferry Recreation Park in Spokane, Wash.

Ritzenhein, a two-time Olympian, will look to take his third U.S. cross country title while Flanagan, the Olympic bronze medalist at 10,000 meters, will be on a quest for her fourth national cross country crown.

In addition to the national titles up for grabs in Spokane, open and junior men and women will qualify to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships March 28 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

In the women's race Flanagan will face defending champion Emily Brown (Minneapolis, Minn.), two-time USA Women's 10 km Champion Molly Huddle (Providence, R.I.) and six-time USA Cross Country team member Katie McGregor (Saint Louis Park, Minn.). The women's race will also see the return of 2006 USA 8 km Cross Country champion Blake Russell (Monterey, Calif.), who is returning to competition for the first time since the birth of her first child last year.

National championships will also be decided for masters men and women at 8 km with titles on the line in five-year age groups beginning at age 40 and up.

The fields will feature masters aces Tracy Lokken (Marquette, Mich.), Ray Pugsley (Potomac Falls, Va.), Colleen De Reuck (Boulder, Colo.), Laura Haefeli (Boulder, Colo.); and Kathryn Martin (Northport, N.Y.)."
