Jim Ryun Headlines at Hillsdale College
========================================
Jim Ryun, one of America's most celebrated milers and a former U.S. Congressman from Kansas, visited the campus of Hillsdale College on Valentine's Day as a guest speaker. Ryun was in Michigan to speak to the MITCA Clinic and Hillsdale's Coach Bill Lundberg was able to have him do double duty in our state. Lundberg and Ryun have been friends for decades, as both were star athletes at Kansas. Our show captures a moment after Ryun's talk to a packed auditorium at Hillsdale. Our videographer was Carter Sherline of Frog Prince Studios.

Crim Expands: Opens New Office in Oakland County
==================================================
Flint’s premier fitness organization is preparing to open a second office, the first outside Genesee County. Officials from The Crim Fitness Foundation and Oakland County Executive L Brooks Patterson cut the ribbon Febraury 18 to officially open the Brooksie Way/Crim Fitness Foundation satellite office in Rochester Hills, close to the Brooksie Way Half Marathon Course.

Patterson will also distribute the first of several “mini grants” from proceeds from the Brooksie Way event, which is an official race of Oakland County and the Crim. These grants will be awarded to local entities for fitness and health related initiatives.

According to Crim Race Director Deb Kiertzner, the satellite office will offer convenience for Crim staff handling race operations as well as The Crim Training Program for The Brooksie Way, which will kick off later this spring.

“Having an office in Oakland County will enable us to have a face in the neighborhood, and be close to the course for meetings and a small amount of storage,” Kiertzner added, “the Crim name on the door represents the expansion of an important Flint institution beyond our home-base.”

E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Heart Health
====================================================================
February is Heart Health Month so this week’s E2 nutrition tip features high blood pressure. Hypertension affects 1 in 4 working-age American adults. Twenty-five percent of these individuals are unaware that their blood pressure is high. It is one of the top 4 most expensive health conditions to US employers in terms of medical claims, lost productivity and absenteeism. Prehypertension is defined as 120-139/80-89 and high blood pressure is 140/90 or more. Taking a high blood pressure pill may reduce systolic blood pressure by 6-11 mm Hg. While this is a critical step, individuals gain additional benefit by incorporating healthy lifestyle changes. The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation & Treatment of High Blood Pressure correlated a reduction in systolic blood pressure to the following healthy lifestyle changes: 4-9mm Hg decrease with regular physical activity; 5-20 mm Hg with a 22 pound weight reduction; 2-4 mm Hg by limiting alcohol consumption; and 8-11 mm Hg by reducing salt intake. These healthier behaviors also reduce the risk for becoming overweight and atherosclerosis. Runner’s with high blood pressure need to follow the medical protocol established by their physician including regular monitoring. Runner’s should be proud of the contribution their healthy lifestyles make towards improving their heart health, beyond just taking a pill and calling it a day. For individualized nutrition education on the DASH diet for hypertension please contact me at www.e2dietitian.com.

High School Students Hold Scenic Spring Race in Gaylord
====================================================================
We expect typical high-school student fund-raisers to be car-washes and magazine sales, but the students at St. Mary's High School in Gaylord aren't typical. They are holding the Snowbird Spring Scamper 10K Run, 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run as their class fundraiser. We're always impressed with Gaylord's community spirit, and these high school students fit right in with a portion of their proceeds designated for their local United Way.

The race will be held on Rick Smith's Tradition golf course at Treetops Resort and we can guarantee the scenery as well as Treetops and Gaylord hospitality.

Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Announces a Cap of 16,000
====================================================================
If you haven't decided on a spring marathon yet, take a look at Pittsburgh. The Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon disappeared for a few years, but we're glad to see this event back and stronger than ever. Pittsburg is an easy half day's drive from Southeast Michigan and the course and the city are scenic and flatter than you 'd think. Race Officials are nearing the cap of 16,000 already. The race will be May 2, 2010 and events includes a half-marathon, relay and kids race.
