FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANTS TO CRIM & HOUGHTON COUNTY TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD OBESITY
=============================================================================
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation announced major grants to 41 communities to improve local policies and community environments to make it easier for children and families to eat healthier foods and be more physically active. Each of the 41 new communities will receive a four-year grant of up to $360,000 to craft innovative solutions aimed at helping children and families lead healthier lives. These 41 communities join nine leading Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities which began programs in 2008.
The Crim Fitness Foundation will improve opportunities for physical activity for Flint youth.
The Copper Country Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities project includes plans for increasing the supply of affordable nutritious foods and supporting physical activity. The project focuses on the county’s 7,000 children, particularly those from lower-income families.

E2 EATING & EXERCISE FOR OPTIMAL FITNESS:
DO MICHIGAN RUNNERS BURN MORE CALORIES IN WINTER OR SUMMER?
===========================================================
There should be some benefit beyond heart, lungs, and the “feel good” to running outside on a frosty, winter Michigan day! Unfortunately, calorie burn is not one of them. The metabolism of fat or burning fat for energy, actually slows down when the temperature gets colder. While this is a nice preservation feature if you’re a bear hibernating in a den, or stranded in a blizzard, it’s not the pat on the back you might be looking for if you’re trying to lose weight. While you might breathe heavier when initially heading out, respiration returns to normal fairly quickly. Heart rate is often lower, but not always during cold weather exercise. So no, running outside is not an effective strategy for accelerating calorie burn in the winter months. Despite all this I’ll continue to run outside on cold winter days and hope you do too. Conquering the elements is what we Michigan runners do, neither wind, nor rain, nor sleet, nor snow…not quite super hero stuff but still empowering!

DESIREE DAVILA INSPIRES MARATHON GUIDE'S SHARON EKSTROM
=======================================================
Marathon Guide (http://www.marathonguide.com) posted "The Most Inspirational Marathon Moments of 2009", by Sharon Ekstrom. We enjoyed Sharon's take on 2009, especially this one about Desiree Davila:
"Desiree Davila - Most Improved AND The Next American Medalist?
While Desiree Davila may not be a household name, this Hansons-Brooks teammate had shown improvements especially in 2009 and proved inspirational at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. In 2007, she debuted in the distance at the Boston Marathon with a 2:44:56 (18th place) and returned the following year to run the US Olympic Trials finishing 13th in a 2:37:50. Davila continued to plug away despite being off-the-radar on international elite rosters; until she earned a respectable 5th place at the 2008 Chicago Marathon (2:31:33).
While all eyes were on American Kara Goucher to medal at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Davila ran her own race and at her own pace without expectations. 22 seconds behind the leaders by 10K, Davila picked off runners falling off the lead pack. Her patience and persistence paid off with an incredible personal best and first sub 2:30 marathon in 2:27:53 (11th place) - a huge improvement on anything she had done before and a time that put her into the top three American women now running the marathon.

GREAT PERFORMANCES - ROAD RACING
================================
Thank-you Francing Robinson for alerting us to Cathy Fenton's performance. Francine says, "One of our local runners--Cathy Fenton, of Wayland, Michigan--ran the Disney Marathon on Sunday, January 10, and she took 2nd Female Masters, as well as 1st Place Age Group, with a time of 3:19:47! Cathy was also 21st woman overall!! I think there were over 16,000 runners, with about a 50-50 split for men and women. So obviously, this is quite an accomplishment for Cathy.
"I have run with Cathy for many years (well, watched her run away from me most of the time), and she is one of the most positive, upbeat people I know. She trains very hard--doing much of her training with Alan Martens, of Running Circles in Grand Haven--and I just think she deserves some recognition."
Indeed she does. Congratulations, Cathy.
